Chanel Unveils Cruise Collection

Chanel’s Cruise 2020/21 collection called Balade ed Mediterranee

Today New York is in phase-one of the quarantine lifting. But because many are still wary of letting down their guard, we all move forward to our reimagined reality with baby steps. In a very different universe, today’s news is that Chanel unveiled the 2020/21 cruise collection. In the past history of this alternative-world, cruise collections were grand happenings usually held at exotic destinations around the globe. A few lucky editors and influencers, as well as Chanel clients and of course celebrities, jetted to the 20-minute runway show. Chanel was planning the island of Capri as this year’s setting, but the lock-down put an end to the dreams of limoncello and Caprese salads by blue waters. Chanel’s Creative Director’s comment is below:
“Initially I had Capri in mind, where the show was supposed to take place but didn’t happen in the end because of lockdown,” says Virginie Viard, “So we had to adapt: not only did we decide to use fabrics that we already had, but the collection, more generally, evolved towards a trip around the Mediterranean… The islands, the scent of the eucalyptus, the pink shades of the bougainvillea.” And a free, laid-back allure inspired by the legendary actresses of the 1960s when they would holiday on the Italian and the French Riviera.
This collection was conceived to travel light with “a wardrobe that can be carried in a little suitcase on wheels, a shopper and an embroidered handbag”, a few easy to wear, multipurpose items of clothing that all go together perfectly, and can even be transformed.”
The collection and images underscore Ms. Viard insouciant and youthful approach to Chanel from the moody photography to the model’s carefree hair she is communicating a lighter and more realistic POV for this much-loved brand. My favorites are the simple tweedy halters with belly chains wrapped around the waist. Please enjoy this momentary distraction from our reality courtesy of Chanel
